Summary: Following the success of her breakout poem, "B," Sarah Kay releases her debut collection of poetry featuring work from the first decade of her career. No Matter the Wreckage presents readers with new and beloved work that showcases Kay's knack for celebrating family, love, travel, history, and unlikely love affairs between inanimate objects ("Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire"), among other curious topics. Both fresh and wise, Kay's poetry allows readers to join in on her journey of discovering herself and the world around her. It's an honest and powerful collection.

I'm going to be completely honest here. I didn't know anything about Sarah Kay or her poetry before I met her at the signing for Jonny Sun's book this past June, but once I heard her read her poem "The Paradox," I was immediately enthralled and added her poetry collection, No Matter The Wreckage, to my TBR and my Christmas want list. And that's exactly what I ended up getting!

No Matter The Wreckage is a brilliant poetry collection that delves into Sarah Kay's past with poems that illuminate everything from her childhood, to her adulthood, to being born and raised in New York City. Some of my favorite poems in the collection had to do with her childhood out in Montauk and even about women's empowerment (with tons of great lines that I plan to put on some signs for women's marches in the future!).

I don't know what else I can say about this collection other than it was so, so great. This book is only 130 pages, so it's short to begin with, but I managed to tear through the entire book in less than 12 hours because I just kept wanting to read the next poem and read more of Kay's amazing words. The poems themselves aren't very long, 3 pages at most and 3 lines at least, so this makes this book something you can definitely throw in your bag and read between subway stops or while waiting in line for your morning coffee.

Sarah Kay's spectacular poetry reached me so deeply that I've already passed the book on to my little sister a mere ten minutes after reading it, because I wanted to share the gift of these spectacular and empowering words with her. I've also recommended the book to my other friends that are into poetry, and even some that haven't read poetry before. Whether or not you're a big fan of poetry, I absolutely recommend picking this book up, because I can absolutely guarantee that you will fall in love with it. I was never a huge fan of poetry, never having read Milk & Honey, but after picking up The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace, I found myself drawn to poetry in a way that I have never been before. And now, after reading Sarah Kay's poetry collection, I'm touched even further.

Plus, for the first time in what seems like forever, Sarah Kay's words have inspired me to start writing again. I used to write poetry from time to time, never truly sticking to it because I was never really inspired, but now I am itching to get my pen on a page and scribbling my thoughts and my poems down. And I am so, so grateful for that feeling.

Overall, I absolutely loved No Matter The Wreckage. I tore through this book so fast because I just couldn't put it down, and I already can't wait to buy Sarah's next book this upcoming March. If you haven't read any of Sarah Kay's work yet, I'd definitely recommend picking this book up (it's currently on sale for less than $10 on Amazon!), because Sarah Kay is an extraordinary poet whose words you definitely don't want to miss.
